  • MAINTENANCE ADVICE

    MAINTENANCE ADVICE

The component parts and materials used in your watch have been selected for their quality and technical properties. This advice on cleaning and maintenance will help you to maintain the appearance of your watch and keep it in good working order.

our recommendations automatic watches quartz watches cleaning

Advice on keeping your timepiece in good working order

    Magnetism :

With so many devices in use, magnetic and electromagnetic fields are becoming increasingly present in the world around us, and this magnetism can affect watch performance.
To avoid any magnetic interference, we recommend that you keep yourwatch away from any devices, which could emit magnetic fields (e.g. mobilephones, computers, refrigerators, speakers, magnetic doors, television sets).
It is also strongly advised that you remove your watch before walking through airport security checkpoints.

    Water resistance :

Information on water resistance relates to pressure measurements taken in the workshop, not at actual depths.
As the gaskets have a limited lifespan, we recommend that you do notwear your watch in the shower. Powerful water jets hitting the push-pieces orthe crowns could cause water ingress.
We recommend that you have the water resistance of your watch checked every two years. If you live in an area where the climate is particularly humid, we recommend checking the water resistance more frequently (every year).

    Setting the time:

As indicated in the user manuals, we recommend that you do not set the time on your quartz watch between 21:00 and 03:00.
For mechanical watches (hand-wound or self-winding), it is recommended that you avoid using the crown when the date is in the process of changing (between approximately 23:50 and 00:10).

Swimming in the sea and in pools

Always rinse your watch in fresh water after you have been swimming (inthe sea or pool).

    Temperatures

The mechanism on your watch is guaranteed to work correctly between-20°C and +60°C. Outside this temperature range, your watch will be less accurate. You are also recommended to avoid thermal shocks that could damage your watch, or certain parts of your watch, such as the crystal, which could break.
Excessive temperatures also affect the oils in the movements: very low temperatures make them less fluid, while very hot temperatures make them prone to dry out more quickly. It is therefore recommended that you have your watch serviced more frequently in hot climates.
Avoid sudden changes in temperature. After a sharp change in temperature, some condensation may appear under the crystal of your watch. This condensation should disappear after a few minutes and does not affect the performance of your timepiece. If the condensation does not disappear, please contact your nearest approved Bell & Ross center.

    Exposure to sunlight

Prolonged exposure to sunlight may alter the colour rendering of your watch (discolouration of the dial, hands and strap). It may also alter the gaskets.

    Chemical products

Chemical products (e.g. solvents, detergents, cosmetics) can damage the straps and gaskets on your watch, thereby impairing its water resistance.

    Straps

It is normal for leather straps to develop a patina over time. To preserve them, you are recommended to keep them away from water.

To maintain your metal strap, use a small brush and soapy water, then dry with a soft cloth.

Always rinse your rubber strap thoroughly after swimming, as salt water or chlorinated water can affect the flexibility of the rubber strap, making it brittle.

    Impacts

To keep your watch in good working order, avoid any major shocks or vibrations.

Avoid dropping ceramic watches. In fact, although ceramic is a highly scratch-resistant material, a major shock (such as the impact caused by dropping it) could break the case.

    Crown and push-pieces

Ensure that the crown and push-pieces on your watch are always completely screwed in, or in the neutral position, as this guarantees the water resistance of your watch. It is therefore strongly recommended that you do not use these components under water.

If your watch is equipped with a crown with a double gasket, ensure that the crown is fully pushed in, and in the neutral position.

    SPECIAL FINISHES

    PVD

PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) is a surface treatment used to apply colour to a metal case, which means that any shock or friction can change or damage the appearance of your watch.

    Argentium®

On Argentium® watches, a normal oxidation effect may appear, as on any item made from silver, although the Argentium® alloy slows down oxidation.

    Bronze

Bronze is the oldest metal harnessed by man. It oxidises on contact with air and humidity, forming a layer which can vary from dark brown to greyish green (verdigris). This surface protects the core of the metal, as shown by the bronzes – dating back several thousand years – which have been unearthed by archaeologists.

The patina process starts as soon as the metal is cast into bars. Machining parts exposes the metal core, which itself begins to develop a surface patina.

The patina will vary, and develop at different speeds, depending on the humidity and salinity of the air, the ambient temperature, and the acidity of the skin.

    Carbone Forgé®

Carbone Forgé® is a very lightweight material with exceptional mechanical properties. Although it is harder than steel or titanium, Carbone Forgé® is still susceptible to scratches.

The BR-X1 Carbone Forgé® has been built so that the titanium container is water-resistant. The two components made from Carbone Forgé® protect this case.

To keep your watch in good working order, we recommend that you wind it regularly when it is not being worn.

The self-winding mechanical movement is wound thanks to the movement of the wrist. To guarantee optimal operation, we recommend that you ensure the strap is correctly adjusted, to prevent any loss of power.

Most Bell & Ross watches have a power reserve of approx. 40 hours when not worn, provided that they are fully wound. Some grand complication watches have a longer power reserve (up to 5 days). The watch must therefore be wound (by rotating crown clockwise approx. 40 times) if it is not worn for longer than the power reserve autonomy.

Although they are equipped with powerful shock absorbers, mechanical watch movements are still delicate.

It is therefore recommended that you do not wear your watch for "high impact" sports, such as golf or tennis, as these repeated jolting movements could alter the setting or even damage one or more components of the mechanism.

Bell & Ross quartz watches are powered by a 1.55 V silver-oxide battery, with a theoretical service life of two years, which varies depending on the models.

It is important that you have your flat watch battery replaced as soon as possible. This will prevent any leakages which could permanently damage the movement.

IMPORTANT: TO GUARANTEE PERFECT WATER RESISTANCE, DO NOT USE THE PUSH-PIECES UNDER WATER AND ENSURE THAT THE CROWNS ARE FULLY SCREWED IN, OR IN THE NEUTRAL POSITION, BEFORE SUBMERGING IN WATER.

WATCHES WITH CERAMIC, METAL OR RUBBER STRAPS

Clean the watch with soapy water then rinse off thoroughly. Dry using a soft cloth.

WATCHES WITH A WHITE RUBBER STRAP

If there is a stubborn stain on the strap, (such as dye stains and ingrained dirt), clean the strap with warm water and bicarbonate of soda, scrubbing with a moderately stiff brush. Rinse with water and dry using a soft cloth.

WATCHES WITH STRAPS MADE FROM LEATHER, CASHMERE OR WOOL

Polish your strap using a soft cloth.

Polishing watches made from metal (steel, titanium, precious metals)restores their original appearance, as it significantly reduces surface scratches.

For deep scratches, or major impacts, polishing will not be able to completely repair the damage.

Our watchmakers will also perform some maintenance operations, in addition to polishing the components:

    • checking the operation of the movement
    • replacing the battery for quartz watches or adjusting the automatic movement
    • replacing the bars or screws, if necessary

In addition, only watches which are distributed by approved Bell & Ross retailers are certified as authentic.

Where are Bell & Ross watches produced?

All Bell & Ross watches are Swiss Made. Assembly and adjustments are performed by our master watchmakers in our production unit in La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland.

What is the warranty for Bell & Ross watches? What does it cover and how long is it valid?

Bell & Ross watches benefit from an international warranty which is valid for two years (parts and labour). This warranty does not cover straps, wearing of surface treatments, consequences of the watch ageing through normal use, or any damage caused by inappropriate use.

Nor does the warranty cover any handling or repair operation carried out by a third party unless the is a watchmaker or a service center approved by Bell & Ross.

What maintenance does my Bell & Ross watch require? Should any special precautions be taken?

To prevent any damage to the appearance of your watch and to keep it in optimal working order, we recommend that you avoid any thermal shocks, vibrations and contact with solvents. It is also recommended that any direct exposure to sunlight is avoided. Finally, avoid any contact with speakers or other electrical appliances, as these carry a risk of magnetisation.

After immersion in seawater, carefully rinse the watch in fresh water at room temperature, and dry with a soft (non-abrasive) cloth.

Where and how do I have my Bell & Ross watch repaired?

To have your Bell & Ross watch repaired, always contact the Approved Bell & Ross Network. You can contact an approved Bell & Ross retailer (http://www.bellross.com/ww/pos/store_locator/), or an Approved Bell & Ross Service Center (http://www.bellross.com/ww/pos/service_centers/). For any queries relating to repairs, please contact our After-Sales Department: sav@bellross.com.

How do I send my Bell & Ross watch for repair?

If you wish to have your watch repaired, please contact our After-Sales Department (sav@bellross.com), or an Approved Bell & Ross Retailer, who will inform you directly how to send your watch for repair.

How long will the repair take?

Operations vary according to the nature of the repairs to be carried out, and the number of watches being handled by the Service Center concerned.

The Service Center, or the Approved Retailer, will let you know how long your repair will take.

Why is it recommended that only the Official Bell & Ross Network is used for repairs to Bell & Ross watches?

It is recommended that you only use the Approved Bell & Ross Network so that you can benefit from the services of qualified watchmakers who receive constant training. Only Approved Bell & Ross Service Centers have the special tooling, original spare parts and expertise in repairing and servicing Bell & Ross watches.

Moreover, any work carried out by a third party other than a Bell & Ross Service Center will render your warranty null and void.

Can Bell & Ross watches be damaged by magnetism?

To avoid any magnetic interference (which would make the watch gain time), we recommend that you keep your watch away from any appliances which could emit magnetic fields (e.g. mobile phones, computers, refrigerators, speakers, magnetic doors, television sets).

You are also strongly advised to remove your watch before walking through airport security checkpoints.

Normal operation can be restored by having your watch demagnetised by an Approved Watchmaker using appropriate equipment.

How can I keep my Bell & Ross watch in good working order?

To keep your watch in good working order, it is important to follow the recommendations for use and have it serviced regularly by an Approved Service Center.

It is recommended that you have your watch serviced every two years, with a full service performed every four years.

What precautions should I take when using my Bell & Ross watch in wet environments?

We recommend that you do not wear your Bell & Ross watch in the shower. The powerful jets could result in water getting inside your watch.

Always rinse your watch in fresh water after you have been swimming (in the sea or pool).

Ensure that the crowns and/or push-pieces on your watch are always completely screwed in, or in the neutral position, as this guarantees the water resistance of your watch. It is therefore strongly recommended that you do not use the crowns and push-pieces under water.

How should I clean my Bell & Ross watch?

To clean your Bell & Ross watch, use fresh water at room temperature, taking care never to move the crown and push-pieces. Dry with a soft (non-abrasive) cloth.  You should also ensure that straps made from leather, satin, wool or cashmere are never immersed in water.

How should I take care of my Bell & Ross watch when I'm not wearing it?

When you are not wearing your Bell & Ross watch, it should be stored away from humidity, intense heat or light, or magnetic fields. Mechanical watches (hand-wound or self-winding) must also be wound regularly.

Can I wear my Bell & Ross watch during sports?

Bell & Ross watches can be worn for most sports. It is highly recommended that a watch which is water-resistant up to at least 200 m is used for underwater diving. You should, however, avoid wearing your watch for "high impact" sports (e.g. downhill mountain biking, golf, tennis).

    Technical details

Which movements are used for Bell & Ross watches?

Bell & Ross only uses Swiss Made movements, developed and/or selected from the best manufactures. (e.g. ETA, Sellita, MHC, Dubois-Depraz, Vincent Calabrese, Technotime).

What is the difference between a quartz movement and a mechanical movement?

In quartz watches, the power source is electrical (battery) and the regulating organ is electronic (vibration of a quartz crystal driven by a microprocessor). Watches equipped with a mechanical movement (hand-wound or self-winding) operate using a wound spring. The regulating organ is a balance spring equipped with an anchor escapement.

What is a hand-wound mechanical watch?

A hand-wound mechanical watch is a watch whose mainspring is wound using the crown.

What is the water resistance of Bell & Ross watches?

The water resistance of Bell & Ross watches varies from 30 to 10,000 meters.

Watches in the Marine collection (BR 02) are water-resistant to a depth of 200 to 1000 meters. Gold watches are generally water-resistant to a depth of 30 or 50 m, as they are not designed for sports. The majority of Bell & Ross watches are water-resistant to 100 meters.

What is the power reserve on Bell & Ross watches?

This criterion only affects mechanical watches (hand-wound or self-winding). In general, Bell & Ross watches have a power reserve of approximately 40 hours. Some grand complication watches have a power reserve of 100 to 120 hours.

What is the watch bezel for?

Fixed bezels, which are not engraved, are decorative and also serve to protect. Fixed bezels, which are engraved, may contain a scale providing secondary information such as a minute track or a tachymeter scale. Uni-directional rotating bezels equipped with a minute track are used to calculate submersion times for diving. Fixed or rotating bezels engraved with 24 hours show a second time zone over 24 hours.

How often should I wind my Bell & Ross watch?

Hand-wound mechanical watches should be wound at least once a day, or at least once every 40 hours. Automatic watches should be wound if they are not worn for more than one day. Watches with a power reserve indicator should be wound when the indicator is in the low zone.

How do I set the date on my Bell & Ross watch?

Most movements are equipped with a fast date correction system (crown pulled out to the first notch). However, you should never change the date between 21:00 and 3:00 (on a quartz watch) or 23:50 and 00:10 (on a mechanical watch).

Does the date change on the stroke of midnight?

The date changes between 21:00 and 3:00 for quartz watches, and between 23:50 and 00:10 for mechanical watches. You are therefore advised not to change the date between these times.

What are the precision tolerances for Bell & Ross watches?

In general, the precision tolerances for Bell & Ross watches are 15 seconds per day.

    What does PVD mean?

The acronym PVD stands for Physical Vapour Deposition. This is a high-tech surface treatment created in a vacuum chamber. It is used to add a certain coloured coating to the surface of the metal.

Why has the PVD on my watch faded? What should I do if I want to have it reapplied?

Despite being highly durable, it is likely that the PVD on your watch will fade in places over time. In certain cases, the treatment can be reapplied. To find out if this operation would be feasible on your watch, please contact our After-Sales Department at sav@bellross.com

Can the sapphire crystal on my watch be scratched?

Sapphire crystal is a material that few other materials can scratch. It is therefore much more scratch-resistant than any other watch crystal.

Is it possible to remove scratches from Bell & Ross watch cases?

It is possible to remove surface scratches from cases made from steel, titanium or gold, which are not galvanised or which do not have a PVD or DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coating.  Only minor scratches or impact damage can be polished. To find out if this operation would be feasible on your watch, please contact our After-Sales Department at sav@bellross.com

What are the characteristics of the ceramic used by Bell & Ross?

The ceramic used by Bell & Ross is yttria-stabilised zirconia, obtained through a highly complex production process, including phases of injection, debinding, shrinking, and drying.

How are the diamonds used in Bell & Ross watches sourced?

The diamonds used in Bell & Ross watches come from safe, certified sources guaranteeing full traceability.

Can Bell & Ross watches be engraved?

Some models can be engraved, depending on the space available on the back. Please contact our After-Sales Department for further information on feasibility, prices and lead times. sav@bellross.com

    Straps

How is the alligator leather for Bell & Ross straps sourced?

Bell & Ross only uses alligator leather from Louisiana harvested from certified farms, guaranteeing full traceability and compliant with CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species).

What is the lifespan of Bell & Ross straps?

Straps made from metal and rubber can have a lifespan of several years, if you follow the recommendations for use. The lifespan of straps made from leather, fabric or satin varies widely depending on the individual and their usage. Their lifespan can range from several months to over two years. Some leathers are more delicate than others. In terms of wear, the climate and the atmospheric humidity are important factors. The acidity of the skin and cosmetic creams also affect the lifespan.

    Are straps covered under warranty?

the bracelets are only covered by the legal guarantee of conformity (article L217.1 to L217.4 of the code of the consumption) and the guarantee of latent defects (article 1641 of the civil code)

How do I choose the right size strap?

To help you choose the right size strap, please use the measuring tool which can be printed from our website. This is included on each watch or strap product sheet. If you cannot print these size guides, you can use a measuring tape to find your wrist measurement. The strap sizes with the corresponding wrist measurements (in cm/inches) are given below.

Note: Straps made from synthetic fiber are a large fit. Ensure that you refer to the measuring tools available on our website, or to the size guides in these tables. ADD INCHES.
